What colour should I paint my...? ?

What colour should I paint my...? ?

Be honest..

have you ever made a decision about furniture, tiles, flooring or paint based on what your friends have said?

Unless you have a bunch of interior designer friends then this is one of the worst things you could ever do.. in my books anyway!

Yet this is the number 1 thing people do when they are not sure and can't decide.

it's like the old question your mum used to ask you, 'would you jump off a cliff if all your friends told you to do it?'

Well of course not. But why do we value what our friends think so much when they have no interior design merit?

I have seen this time and time again, where someone has chosen a wall paint colour because their friend has it. It's familiar, it's safe, it saves them actually doing any research and speaking to a colour expert for the right advice.

It takes a trained eye and an air of finesse to select the right wall colour to suit a certain look and feel from the thousands of options that are out there.

We spend most of our lives indoors, so investing in creating the best habitat for relaxation, learning, play, work and sleep can have a huge impact on our daily lives.

Choosing the wrong colour can also have negative consequences, and not only in wasting time and money re-painting if you don’t get it right!

Living with the wrong colour in a space can result in an uncomfortable living environment impacting mood, productivity, causing irritation or unrest for you and your whole family, without you even realising it.

Colour is deeply connected with our psychology and emotions and a strategically selected colour can make a continued positive impact in our everyday lives.

Colour psychology is incredibly complex and personal to each individual with factors like past experience and cultural background impacting how colour is received. However there are some general rules on colour associations you may find useful:

  1. Red: Often associated with energy, passion, and excitement. It can also evoke feelings of love, warmth, and intensity. On the other hand, it may be linked to danger or warning.
  2. Blue: Frequently associated with calmness, trust, and reliability. It can also represent tranquility, professionalism, and intelligence.
  3. Green: Linked to nature, growth, and freshness. It is often associated with feelings of relaxation, balance, and harmony.
  4. Yellow: Associated with warmth, happiness, and positivity. It can also be attention-grabbing and energetic. However, too much yellow can be overwhelming.
  5. Purple: Often associated with luxury, sophistication, and creativity. It can also evoke a sense of mystery and spirituality.
  6. Orange: Represents enthusiasm, energy, and warmth. It is a vibrant and attention-grabbing colour.
  7. Black: Often associated with elegance, formality, and power. It can also represent mystery or the unknown.
  8. White: Symbolizes purity, cleanliness, and simplicity. It can also represent innocence and new beginnings.
  9. Grey: Linked to neutrality, balance, and sophistication. It can convey a sense of practicality and timelessness.

These feelings and associations don’t just apply to saturated colour; they also have an affect on whites and neutral tones through undertones.

You may be beginning to see how choosing the right paint colour is starting to get more complex!

So don't ask your friends, don't even ask your family.

Investing in the advice of a colour expert will result in the satisfaction that you have picked the exact shade of paint that perfectly suits your space. You will walk into the room every time and have the comfort and assurance that things just feel completely right.
