Colour Blocking & Colour Saturation

Colour Blocking & Colour Saturation

As a lover of colour, I think the best way to fully enjoy a favourite colour in your home would have to be by using colour saturation in your design. Colour saturation occurs when you choose a colour and use it on mass to achieve its maximum impact in a space. This can also be called colour blocking.

This full enjoyment and delight of your chosen hue creates a dramatic look and heightens your feelings and emotions that are triggered by seeing this colour.  Sure you could paint a feature wall, buy why not all the walls, and the ceiling too! Really encapsulate yourself in your favourite hue by creating a sanctuary and an escape from the busy world around you.

For example, if blues make you feel peaceful, give you clarity and a sense of calm then why not layer blues on top of blues and get that deep colour saturation for a maximum calming effect like you were swimming in the ocean or in a deep state of relaxation at the day spa!

Deep blues can be sophisticated, formal, serene and grounding, while pale sky blues can make us feel light, airy, uplifted and optimistic.

With your styling, take a deep dive instead of dipping your toe in! Layer your blues to accentuate the colour and refrain from trying to balance it out. You will feel refreshed and completely unable to ignore that superpower that blue has on you.

For maximum impact of your chosen colour try using styling items in a colour opposite on the colour wheel, such as an orange accent cushion or vase if your colour theme is blue. This gives your eye something to focus on and makes the colour saturation really pop.

Dulux Diorite and Pharaoh’s Gem wash this bedroom in a soothing green. The other main elements of carpet, bed head and bed spread are all toned in a similar green, then styled with fun patterns and contrasting colours in mustard and orange, giving this room the vibrance and freshness of spring.

Colour saturation works especially well in a bedroom, whether it’s the master suite, a kids bedroom or even a guest room. Being able to cater to an individual’s favourite colour allows you to create a unique bedroom to suit their personality. Guests will also appreciate a visually delightful and sensory experience when they come to stay.
